Mr. Big, as the name suggests, speaks volumes. This hard rock super group comprises of top notch members, legendary bassist Billy Sheehan after leaving David Lee Roth’s solo band. Eric Martin on vocals, Pat Torpey on drums and guitar virtuoso Paul Gilbert (Racer X). Once again the band's tasted success, their North-East Europe tour was a resounding hit. The Indian lap of the Asian tour begins with Bangalore [10th October, Gayatri Vihar, Freeway 19, Bangalore Palace Grounds, followed by Shillong [12th October, Polo grounds) and Dimapur, Nagaland (14th October 2009, DDSC Stadium)

Formed in 1988, MR. BIG created a legacy by playing & challenging larger confines of rock genre. MR. BIG is revered by their fans & critiques for their exceptional compositions which include Melodies, Guitar shredding and choruses. Exciting assortments of heavy metal, ballad, blues-rock that cater to a wide range of audience have resulted in singles, which topped charts for weeks on end across countries and continents. Some of the biggest hits include ‘To Be With You’ & ‘Just Take My Heart’ from their album ‘Lean Into It’. Follow up cover ‘Wild World’ which also made it very big on the charts. The Mr. BIG band is made up of Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert, Eric Martin & Pat Torpey, all of whom are accomplished artists in their own right and that gives them the distinction of being a ‘Super Group’.

As the lights go down and the intro tape begins to roll at Mr Big’s first concert in India this October, we will be witnessing a small piece of rock music history. It is true. It has finally happened. Mr Big is back. And India is one of the privileged countries to be on the second leg of their reunion tour.

Rock music enthusiasts all over the world have spent over a decade waiting for this reunion. Mr Big’s music is seen by many as the perfect combination of fiery instrumental virtuosity tempered with accessible melodies and grooves. Mr Big succeeded where many before and since have failed. They are a band that musicians and non musicians are equally impressed by, neither being laughed at by musicians for being ‘sell outs’ nor being ignored by non musicians as being ‘esoteric and technical’.

Their self-titled debut album released in 1989 brought them considerable success in Japan, a market that has remained loyal to the band since the beginning. It was only with their second album, 1991’s Lean Into It, that the band achieved commercial success in America. The album closer, the acoustic ballad, To Be With You went to number one in 15 countries.

With Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan, both of whom are known for their bag of technical skills, playing the electric guitar and bass with their teeth without much effort is going to be a visual treat for the rock enthusiasts! Their performance also includes a jam-up by the duo using their ‘double-neck’ guitar and bass, with Eric Martin & Pat Torpey lending helping hands!

Eric Martin known for his soulful voice, has been able to sing any genre of music be it rock, soul or even country, is going to move the crowd with his beautifully controlled vocals. Also in store would be a solo by the very creative Pat Torpey, who has conducted numerous clinics all over the world for Tama Drums.

Identified early on as a "musicians' band", Mr. Big has been able to produce numerous hits that ranged across a wide array of rock genres, be it ballad, heavy metal, or blues rock. Some of the songs which are on the band’s set-list are-

Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (The Electric Drill Song)
Green-Tinted Sixties Mind
Alive And Kickin’
Next Time Around

Just Take My Heart
Wild World
Addicted To That Rush
To Be With You
Colorado Bulldog

Worldwide commercial success came with their second album, Lean Into It (1991). Seen as a hard rock classic, this album is the epitome of Mr Big’s sound. The album is best remembered for the Paul Gilbert penned masterpiece Green Tinted Sixties Mind and it’s closing track, the Eric Martin’s acoustic ballad Another remarkable song off Lean Into It is Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (The Electric Drill Song), a fine example of Paul Gilbert’s genius, which includes a section played on guitar and bass using electric drills!

The band continued their double-sided approach for their subsequent albums, Bump Ahead (1993) and Hey Man (1996), with a slightly more commercial bent. In 1997, Paul Gilbert left the band amidst tensions within the band, to start a solo career. He was replaced by former Poison guitarist Richie Kotzen with whom the band released two further albums Get Over It (2001) and Actual Size (2001). Further internal conflicts eventually split the band up in 2002, all of its members moving on to solo careers.

It seemed like that was the end of Mr Big. They were a thing of the past, relegated to nostalgic reminiscences. Hopes of a reunion were rekindled in 2008, though, after a Paul Gilbert show in West Hollywood where Sheehan, Torpey, Kotzen and Gilbert performed an encore of Mr Big songs, having found themselves in the same venue purely by chance. This led to the realistic possibility of a reunion being discussed. In November last year, at a show in Brighton, when asked about whether or not Mr Big would reunite, Paul Gilbert answered us with the tantalising nugget “I can’t say anything as yet. You wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise of a new gift by unwrapping it too soon, would you?”

On 1st February 2009, coinciding with MR. BIG's very first album release in 1989, Paul, Eric, Billy, and Pat sent out a message officially announcing the reunion of MR. BIG to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album. The reunion comes for the first time in 13 years after the Super Group split. The fact that this super group has never played in India will make this tour even more memorable amongst fans. The news of the re-union is already highly talked about affair. “We are very excited to come to India. Eric played in Shillong and expressed the crowd in the country is fantastic. We can’t wait to experience it! Our set list will be a mix of our studio records and a few surprises, so await India!-And we shall rock”-say Paul Gilbert and Pat Torpey

The Mr. Big reunion will be promoted by Bangalore based entertainment and media company NeoClasse. The company has been in business for more than a decade working with some of the best known global brands and implemented solutions across India and abroad. Bangalore based, Neoclasse is a 15 year old group, which has businesses in entertainment, communication and media.

“Our strengths are that we have some of the best people in the industry working with us, we use a combination of proprietary and universal best practices to ensure error free delivery. Our future focus is to move towards a property based portfolio, Mr Big reunion world tour is an initiative towards this. There are more concerts to come in the coming months.” says Suhael G.M.CMD-NeoClasse Entertainment Media and Communications Private Limited.

Alluding to the choice of band playing in India and reason for bringing Mr Big,"Apart from the fact that Mr Big is a true rock super group, the reunion line up consists of all original band members. This tour is a much awaited one the world over. The first leg of the tour that happened in Japan saw an audience of around 100 thousand! ".

Continuing in the same vein Suhael says,” Being an original line-up, the band will be performing in India for the first time, the timing being great, (just before Diwali and the fact that no concerts have happened in a long time, all these and more make it reason enough to get them to INDIA.
